The Architecture of Sound: Why the Baroque Still Speaks

To the modern ear, the term "Baroque" often conjures images of gilded cherubs and excessive ornamentation. Yet, beneath the surface layer of flourish lies a mathematical and structural rigor that is remarkably contemporary.

In my recent work with the Missa Brevis, I found myself returning to the foundational logic of Dieterich Buxtehude. His ability to maintain a crystal-clear melodic line while supporting it with a labyrinth of independent voices is a feat of architectural genius.

The Structural Bridge

When we compose choral music today, we are often tempted by the lush, vertical harmonies of the late Romantic era. While beautiful, these "walls of sound" can sometimes obscure the individual humanity of the singer.

The Baroque approach treats each voice as a primary citizen. It is a democratic form of music. As I engraver these scores, I am constantly reminded that legibility and logic are the servants of expression, not the masters of it.
